Multimodal Project
Steve McCurry
Synopsis
For my presentation, I chose to look into the work of Steve McCurry. McCurry has spent over 30 years traveling the world and photographing his experiences. His work consists of mostly ethically evaluative and interpretive photos, giving the viewer the opportunity to find a deeper meaning behind the image in front of them. His work has appeared numerous times in National Geographic and McCurry has published a multitude of books and journals over the years. His main goal is to use his photos to enlighten those who are ignorant to the world and the cultures that occupy it. The images I chose to review show the basic range of his work and really emphasize the incredible point of view he wants to share with his audience. McCurry's work ranges from dramatic portraits to cultural celebrations, giving viewers a glimpse of the kind of beauty and trauma that we humans experience through our lives.
New Perception
It took me a while to decide who I wanted to do my project on and as soon as I saw Steve McCurry's work I knew that he was the one. His photographs really tell a story to the viewer and allow them to feel connected to the subject, which is something that I am trying to apply to my own work. McCurry's images showed me the different perspectives that people can have on the world and how the interactions among cultures can vary across the globe. His work helped me to understand that a photograph is more than just an image, its a moment in time that has feeling and purpose. I hope to use some of his techniques of composition and lighting in order to amplify the energy and emotion of my own images and work to capture the little moments that are often overlooked.
